Why Propane for Power Generation?

Propane is a clean, affordable fuel that helps industry and communities move towards a sustainable energy future. Propane power generation deliver reliable and continuous power while reducing costs and carbon emissions. Propane’s proven performance, well-developed infrastructure and rigorous safety standards make it the ideal fuel choice.

Choosing the Best Generator Fuel

Remote and off-grid areas have historically relied heavily on diesel fuel for power generation. Transitioning from diesel to a cleaner, more affordable propane power generation solution can reduce fuel costs by up to 40%, mitigate risk of spills, and reduce maintenance requirements, among a host of other benefits:

PROPANE

DIESEL

Fuel Cost

Propane power generation can reduce fuel costs by up to 40% compared to diesel

Historically, diesel is 40–50% more expensive than propane

Safety & Risk Management

Propane vaporizes when released, eliminating the risk to water, ground or air during transportation, product transfer and storage

Diesel spills are environmentally damaging and costly to cleanup and remediate

Emissions

Propane emits 98% less particulate matter than diesel, and reduces carbon emissions by up to 15%

Risk of not meeting emissions regulations and environmental standards

Equipment Performance

Propane burns cleaner than diesel, leading to a longer engine life and extended service intervals

Direct-fired or electric vaporizers ensure continuous, optimal performance of equipment even at extreme freezing temperatures

Hard particulates cause equipment damage and more frequent maintenance requirements

Availability & Storage

Propane is readily available across Canada—you can get propane anywhere you can get diesel even if you are located off-grid

Propane can be stored long-term with zero degradation or contamination

Propane cylinders are tightly sealed and puncture resistant—not prone to fuel theft

Storage costs at remote sites can be much higher for diesel

Risk of fuel contamination from long-term storage

Green Energy Generation Systems

Dairy farm using renewable energy, solar panels and wind turbines
Renewable energy resources like wind and solar aren’t available 24/7, year-round. And there can be unpredictable weather events that disrupt renewable technologies. A hybrid solution that integrates propane power as a back-up source will provide continuous, stable power while still reducing emissions—making it the perfect partner for renewable energy.

A CHP system, also known as cogeneration, is a technology that is helping companies and facilities reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions by recovering the thermal energy from propane power generation and reusing it to heat their buildings. Provincial governments have recognized the proven benefits of CHP and are offering financial incentives to install these high-efficiency systems.

Advantages of Propane Generators

Propane engines deliver powerful performance with significantly less downtime, even under the most demanding operating conditions. Designed for efficiency (no de-rate), flexibility, and environmental compatibility, propane engines are durable, quiet, and outperform diesel in most applications.

Propane generators provide a commercial power generation solution without the environmental cost. Unlike green technologies like solar or wind power, propane power generators can help meet carbon reduction targets without sacrificing reliability since they are not dependent on weather conditions to meet power demands and therefore not susceptible to brownouts and blackouts that impact operations or communities.

Our Partners for Propane Power Generation Technology

Superior Propane works with engine manufacturing and distributing partners to offer a variety of generator options to meet all required specifications. Whether it’s a high-profile industrial project or a smaller scale community initiative, there’s no room for error or downtime. Our experienced and expert technicians work closely with our partners and customers to design, build and service power systems anywhere in Canada. Plus, we offer flexible financing and rental options, and support with training, commissioning and start-up.

Local Support

Superior has a Canada-wide storage and distribution footprint to rapidly deploy to remote areas and provide local maintenance support. Superior ensures a redundancy plan in case of road closure, including access points across North America as well as carrier contracts to transport from refinery to storage facility. Superior is not limited to one lift point and one commercial route as some competitor fuels are restricted by.

We have the resources to deploy diverse transportation methods including rail, barge and truck to ensure you get the propane you need when you need it.

With over 70 years of experience, we operate in a highly regulated environment and have technical experts specializing in complex projects and applications for mining, construction and other industries. Our expert engineering team specializes in large tank operations with custom designed power requirements, risk mitigation and safety compliance.

We have built strong relationships with Indigenous communities, as they are our customers, distribution partners, employees, and contractors. In fact, we work with one-third of Indigenous groups across Canada and respect all rights, unique cultures, beliefs and needs of Indigenous communities. We are always looking to attract and retain local qualified community members, as well as support initiatives that strengthen Indigenous culture, interests, education and aspirations.

SECURE FUEL SUPPLY

We have extensive propane storage capacity in Canada and access to U.S. supply when needed. With access to an abundant supply and cross-border storage points, Superior Propane can reliably deliver to our customers. Superior proactively plans for seasonal demand by purchasing and storing increased inventory. We also offer:

LARGEST DISTRIBUTION FOOTPRINT

Superior has diverse transportation methods and contracts, and can mobilize quickly to increase inventory in preparation for changing demand. We have employed all channels including truck, rail, barge, pipeline and plane in order to get propane to our customers. We have the largest distribution footprint in Canada and are the only propane distributor in North America, with more than 170 storage and distribution points to serve almost 200,000 customer locations in more than 10,000 communities.

EVENT PREPAREDNESS

Whether it’s unforeseen weather or critical disruptions to transportation, our tank sensor technology allows us to remotely monitor tank levels and prioritize critical deliveries. Customers can also monitor their fuel levels through mySUPERIOR™️ online or our mobile app. Superior also maintains proactive customer communications and notifications as regular course as well as during critical events (ex. Supply Chain Disruptions 2014 due to Shale Gas Exports [wet crops, extreme cold winter] and the CN rail strike in 2019).
